Daniel Hartl

My research interests are focused mainly on evolutionary genomics, molecular evolution, and population genetics. My approach to graduate education is to recruit the smartest people I can find and to help them achieve whatever they feel passionate about. Former graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from my lab have been successful in academics, research, and industry. Alumni hold faculty positions at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Brown, Tufts, NYU, Emory, SUNY Stony Brook, San Francisco State, Wright State, and the Universities of California at Irvine, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Hawaii, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Pittsburgh. Former students with faculty positions abroad are at the Universities of Cambridge (England), Munich (Germany), Florence (Italy), Porto (Portugal), Tromso (Norway), Laval (Quebec), Nagoya (Japan), Ochanomizu (Tokyo), Ryukyus (Okinawa), Mahidol (Bangkok), and Ibadan (Nigeria). Graduates of the Hartl lab also hold senior positions at Novartis, AstraZeneca, Biogen Idec, Immunex, and Sigma-Aldrich, as well as the Broad Institute (Cambridge, MA), American Museum of Natural History (New York), CNRS Evolutionary Biology (Paris, France), Scottish Crop Research Institute (Dundee, Scotland), and CSIRO Division of Plant Industry (Canberra, Australia). I am a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition to more than 350 scientific articles, I have written more than 30 books in various aspects of genetics and evolution.

My current position is Higgins Professor of Biology in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. My graduate training was at University of Wisconsin. After postdoctoral study at the University of California in Berkeley, I assumed faculty positions at the University of Minnesota, Purdue University, and Washington University in St. Louis. At Washington University I was Head of the Department of Genetics and Director of the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences, and I also served briefly as Chairman of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard. I have been honored with the Samuel Weiner Outstanding Scholar Award and Medal, a National Aeronautics and Space Administration Predoctoral Traineeship, a National Institutes of Health Research Career Development Award, the Gold Medal of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Naples, Italy), and election to the Indian Academy of Sciences. I am a Past President of the Genetics Society of America and the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution, and have served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Genetics Society of America, the National Institutes of Health Genetics Study Section, the National Institutes of Health Genetic Basis of Disease Review Committee, the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Research Opportunities in Biology, the National Academy of Sciences Committee on the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation, and on the Editorial Boards of Genetics, Annual Review of Genetics, Molecular Biology and Evolution, Molecular Phylogenetics, Molecular Ecology, Journal of Genetics, Theoretical Population Biology, and BioScience.
